Summary

Unduhagge is a dream exploration game in the spirit of Yume Nikki. Join Mina Mori as she navigates a dreamscape full of absurdities, distressing personal memories and other experiences that push her beyond the veil and into the unknown.

PHOTOSENSITIVITY WARNING. There are some areas with flickering lights and some flashing. Nothing too intense, but I feel like I'm not the best judge of that? So be careful with this game if you have issues with flashing lights.

Premise

Mina has been through hell. Any of the individual traumas she's experienced would have broken a lesser person. But Mina's a survivor.

It was the suicide of her fiancee Aurelius, and her discovery of the occult order in which he was a member, which finally drove her over the edge.

Alone, bereaved, and repulsed by the world, Mina has confined herself to her apartment. What little money she has left goes to alcohol deliveries. She hasn't eaten a real meal in days. Her rent is overdue.

All Mina has left is a collection of Aurelius's esoteric poetry, a laptop with some of her old music, and the solitary vistas of drunken slumber. But it's Aurelius's poetry which has come to dominate her thoughts. Her dreams are haunted by an unusual refrain:

Wae nihxsis prissit.

What does it mean? And why has the strange language of her late fiancee's poetry become the language of her dreams?

Features

  • numerous hub worlds, including +30 unique environments, and nearly 100 rooms to explore!
  • 11 Effects (in the Yume Nikki tradition)
  • 12 collectible pieces of music which Mina can play on her laptop to change the dream world and unlock new realms.
  • uOS, Mina's laptop operating environment, through which you can listen to music found in the dreamscape and save your game.
  • Original pixel art, music, and sound design by Christopher Shorewick.

Controls

  • WASD or Arrow Keys - move
  • Space Bar, Enter, z - interact
  • Escape , X - show menu
  • Shift - toggle sprinting
  • 1 - use an equipped effect (if applicable while dreaming)
  • 9 - wake up (while dreaming)

Technically, as Unduhagge is made in the licensed edition of RM2K3, this game has controller support, but effects will still require a keyboard. As such, use of a controller is NOT currently recommended to play Unduhagge.

Release History

  • Demo v1.3 - Additional environments and significant bug fixes from Demo v 1.2. Please see this blog post for a full breakdown.
  • Demo v1.2 (Jam Edition) - Another contribution to Dream Diary Jam 6, this build was predominantly an artistic overhaul. At least 3 worlds had their tilesets drastically changed, and two hub worlds have now been restructured to be less traditionally spacious hub worlds. The intro is now a lot more fleshed out and cinematic, which is something I failed to accomplish in v1.1. Added one new ability Feather Pen, one new sub-world, and one new piece of music to be discovered in the dreamscape.
  • Demo v1.1 (Jam Edition) - This release, submitted as a contribution to Dream Diary Jam 5, includes a short intro cut-sequence, a re-imagined main hub world, and new worlds and sub-worlds with new original art and music. A new ability has been introduced, and there's more music to be discovered to play on Mina's laptop.
  • Demo v1.0 (Jam Edition) - The first release, launched in time for the Dream Diary 4 game jam. For safety's sake, one downloadable version of the build includes the RPGMaker 2003 RTP. Made using an officially licensed copy of RPGMaker 2003 v1.12a.

Notes for Returning Dreamers

Each version change contains altered flows, so here are the two most important things to keep in mind:

  • Don't expect doors to be consistent between versions! This isn't me being mean the player, I'm just working out which connections make the most sense for the story I'm trying to tell.
  • You're welcome to try to use old saves, but don't be surprised if they crash.

Bug Reporting

Do please let me know if you find any bugs! Unduhagge is a perpetual work in progress that rarely gets updated outside of the DDJ sessions, but I will prioritize bug fixes as soon as I discover them! Leave a message in the comments or reach out to me directly.

Hi, I just recently noticed this game and it's very interesting!

But I've found all sorts of weird bugs during my exploration, some of which cause the game to soft-lock/black screen, and the graphics to display incorrectly, I'd like to give feedback on these issues, but it's a bit inconvenient to use itch, is there any other way of contacting you?

Hey! Sorry about the reply on this. I would love to hear about the bugs you found, since I some day intend to release a final RPG Maker release before I push this project out into a different engine.

You should be able to reach me at reprobus@towerandmoon.ca.

I was actually going to ask if there was a way to be able to communicate directly, like Discord, but it's fine to use email!

Gotcha! I go by lucydawless on discord if you'd prefer. :)

I really like this game, especially for its unique style, the only thing that bothers me is that I dont understand how to wake up, that is, I like the idea of traveling without controlling my sleep (as if it were a coma) but I always restart my game because I get lost ... or am I really stupid and can't find the command to do it?

(1 edit)

You should be able to wake up by pressing 9 (nine) on your keyboard.

You can use the 9 on the numpad too, but only if numlock is...on? Off? I can't tell because my stupid keyboard doesn't have a numlock LED.

If that doesn't work then please let me know, because it's possible you've found a bug!

(Oh, and thanks for playing! I'm glad you like it so far.)

it work!! I'm so happy that I'm not afraid of losing myself again, thanks (is there a way to send you a fanart someday?)

Oh, great! Glad that worked. :)

If you ever wanted to send fan art, you could always reach me at chrisewick@gmail.com.
